JAKARTA PERFORMING ARTS COMMUNITY

PRESENTS

WEST SIDE STORY

The rising violence rate over the cultural, social, and political prejudices that are happening around us has become a backdrop of our society, and as a community that celebrates the diversity of its elements want to speak out against that. And what better way to do that than through something that we are equally passionate about, which is performing arts?

West Side Story

West Side Story is a classic musical by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein with book by Arthur Laurents. Set in New York in the 1960’s.

This musical tells the love story in the midst of a gang rivalry between the white gang “Jets” and their Puerto Rican enemy “Sharks” who respectively  hate each other and who battle each other for territory in their neighborhood.

The story escalates when Tony, a former Jets and best friend of Jet’s leader -Riff,  and Maria, the Shark’s leader’s sister, spot each other across the crowded room and fall in love at first sight.

Torn by their warring sides, Tony and Maria plan to run away from it all. Meanwhile, the gang’s upcoming rumble to fight for the power in the streets complicates things. Hoping they can put an end to this, Maria sends Tony to stop the rumble. The story goes terribly wrong and takes a devastating turn into one of the most heartbreaking tragedies of all time.

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this musical takes you to an emotional journey of love, passion, and violence. Told with soaring melodies, vibrant choreography, and striking social message, this musical is a true timeless piece of musical theater.

BEHIND THE SCENE

STAGING A PRODUCTION IS FUN! BUT IT IS ALSO A HARD WORK.  WE’VE GONE THROUGH UPS AND DOWNS, JOYS AND HARDSHIP, WHICH ONLY MADE US STRONGER AS A TEAM.  HERE’S THE BEHIND THE SCENE.

JPAC GIVES BACK!

We are a non-profit community theater consisting entirely of wonderfully talented volunteers of various ages and backgrounds, with the same fiery passion for musical theater. To share our passion as well as giving back, we are also very excited to donate our proceedings to Theater for Life, a nonprofit applied theater program for underprivileged youths in Depok, West Java. In association with the world scout foundation Ticket to Life, this program was recently founded by the English Art Lab in University of Indonesia earlier this year. This program works with its youth members to create and develop image theater using Auguste Boal’s concept of “theater of the oppressed” to explore issues related to children and young people of Indonesia. The members of ‘Ticket to Life’ will then hold a performance that also serves as a critique to these issues. Therefore, not only does this program help making theater more accessible for the underserved youths, but it also gives them a platform to make a change in their respective communities.
